Will notorious neocon warmonger get rewarded for her failed Ukraine policy with promotion to second in charge of U.S. State Department?
Victoria Nuland has had a hand in every U.S. intervention over the last 30 years, most recently the forever-war in Eastern Europe that threatens to widen into World War III.
Rumors are swirling in Washington that Victoria Nuland, the undersecretary of state for political affairs at the State Department and one of the masterminds of U.S. policy in Ukraine, will receive a promotion to acting second-in-command at the State Department.
Responsible Statecraft first reported on Nuland’s alleged promotion, noting:
“She’s done as much as anyone to sour US-Russia ties; now, she is one of Washington’s top diplomats.”
The report further stated:
“Nuland’s appointment will be a boon for Russia hawks who want to turn up the heat on the Kremlin. But, for those who favor a negotiated end to the conflict in Ukraine, a promotion for the notoriously ‘undiplomatic diplomat’ will be a bitter pill.”
I could not find any official announcement of Nuland’s promotion to second in charge of the U.S. State Department, so this report falls into the category of “unconfirmed.” But even if it doesn’t materialize, this is a woman who has already risen too far up the ladder. Based on her record, she should be demoted, not promoted.
Nuland represents the epitome of the Washington neocon war hawk. Just delve into a war with the world’s most heavily armed nuclear power, Russia, using a proxy on Russia’s border, Ukraine, and milk the war till the last Ukrainian man is standing while draining U.S. munitions to dangerously low levels. That seems to be the strategy thus far from the Washington neocons.
